The Cotee River

OK…..yes I am a little (a lot) behind – but I am on a vacation and doing this to motivate the boys! Wait….at really isn’t helping my case, is it!?! In any case, we haven’t been sitting on our butts doing nothing – we have been busy! My back and ankle can attest to that. Dan, are you reading? I will be in after break!

To show how tired I am, I just published the first paragraph instead of saving it – while I was trying to connect the keyboard that I have – which apparently not only isn’t paired with my iPad but isn’t charged. Whoops. The fatigue is for another post….let’s just say it was a long day and I saw a scooter traffic jam in a gazebo. It was priceless.

As I was starting to say, we took a boat ride on the Cotee River. This was exciting because it is something that we had never done before. After three of us coming down here for over 35 years  (which is amazing considering how young I am) and add the other three coming down for 12 years, to find something new is exciting!! This ride went out of Port Richey and went down the Pithlaschascotee River. Yup. The Cotee River. We went into The Gulf for a bit, too, and saw the really cool stilt houses that I never knew about.

We also found out that the area was popular with movie stars. Seriously. We saw where Shirley Temple, Charlie Chaplin, June and Johnny Cash, Esther Williams, Gloria Swanson (original from Sunset Boulevard), and Kenny Rogers lived. Of course the boys knew Kenny Rogers from the Geico commercial but were kind of clueless on the others.

The stilt houses were cool. They started as places for fishermen to go and stay on weekends rather than going back and forth. Now, they are pretty much party houses! Some have Direct TV and some have generators. Some are still primitive. One of the boat dudes explained the whole tax and ownership part but I tuned out. The captain was…..interesting. At first you would have thought he had stopped for something on the way in. But then when you hear his story (retired fireman and worked at a nuclear plant) you get that he is just totally laid back and enjoying life. The other guy was really good and easier to understand! Ha ha!

I honestly don’t remember what else we did that day – sad, I know. Hey….you travel with the boys and tell me how well YOU do!

The Secret Service could learn a few things from this building!!

So…..the condo itself is beautiful. But – apparently they want to make sure that NOBODY from the outside wants to get in. And if they happen to breach on layer, they certainly can’t breach another layer! There is master key that is needed for the lobby, to get in the pool area – which leads to the beach – then you need it AGAIN to get to the beach. To get back from the beach, key. If you happen to be at the pool and need the bathroom….yup, you need the key (the bathrooms are within the pool area). Once you are done at the pool – or coming back from the beach, you guessed it…..you need you key to GET OUT OF THE POOL AREA. Not kidding. Key is also needed to get in and out of the hot tub area.
I think a moat and drawbridge will be next. Alligators? Maybe retina scans? Actually, that will be easier – there are four adults and two keys. I can’t even begin to describe the juggling and planning involved just to go to the pool or to walk on the beach for sunset….let’s not even mention when dad goes out golfing and we are down a key! And the fear of losing it – my heart skips many beats with just that thought!

Yesterday

It is one of my favorite Beatles songs. But that really isn’t the point of this blog. So….yesterday was kind of a relaxing day – for us. The boys got slightly annoyed (OK, more than slightly) at us because we made them so some school work. The horror!!!! Call cps!!! God forbid we make them somewhat keep up with their classes. They tried the guilt trips – “Our teachers didn’t send work!” Welllll….it sucks for them to have parents like us that email the teachers to see what would be covered. Ha ha ha ha!!!!!! (I would be rubbing my hands together in an evil way if I wasn’t typing). So they looked up some science things and sent emails to their teachers to tell them what they learned.
After that 30 minutes…..again, the horror of doing school work down here, we had them do some tee work for baseball. It was well documented and some pictures were sent to their coach. More proof that we aren’t slacking! (Well, I am – we aren’t letting them slack off)
THEN we goofed off. We hit the pool for a good amount of time until they decided that they were “STARVING”. Oh, and yes, T really DID go into the bathroom in full snorkel gear. If you have to ask, you haven’t met T or heard any T stories! Rich and I decided to take a quick walk down to the Gulf…and man are we glad we did! It was beautiful so we went back and got the boys….who suddenly forgot how they were on the verge of death from starvation. They spent a long time riding the waves!!
Then we really *were* hungry – so after five people showered in two bathrooms (fun times!) we went to The Brown Boxer….or The Cooper as I am calling it. I have renamed it after my hairy boyfriend – who isn’t my real boyfriend but is hairy – and is a brown boxer. But I do love him. And he loves me.
We figured we should take a nice walk on the beach – I mean, it kind of is one of the reasons we are here. So, the four of us headed out….dry. Three of us came back dry. Pretty sure everyone can guess who wasn’t dry. Shocking, I know. Just like the other night when he got wet while walking – and then “accidentally” fell in the pool on the way to the lobby. The good news though is that he did some PT on the beach! Wooo hoooo!!!
So, that was our boring day. Aren’t you glad you asked? Wait you didn’t….but you did read – so if you got bored, don’t blame me! Ha!

More animals for T to love! (and a Yanks game)

Yesterday we made our first trek to Clearwater Marine Aquarium…..notice I said first. Is it sad that we are here for a few weeks and we get a family membership? Yes, it was a rhetorical question. At this point I am pretty sure we could conduct tours and give out information!

Must you also ask how many times T asked if we could get such & such animal? Again, rhetorical question. Many thanks to the lovely Dr. Dan for his fantastic career guidance – after spending some quality time with the good doctor, T decided he wants to be a physical therapist…..but after talking with Dr. Dan (who we do love), T is now thinking animal physical therapy. Yes, there is such a thing – like cotillions. Only cooler and less painful for pre-teen boys to attend. Unless you really tick Dr. Dan off.

Anyway…..Winter and Hope are doing great. Nicholas is still The Man (really, he is – he is the only male dolphin there). The otters still smell – and T still wants one. Guess he didn’t notice the smell. No comment. I still love the turtles. And, yes, I was asked if we could have one. Once again – pretty sure the HOA frowns on things like that but I will be sure to bring it up at the next meeting. Oh – please don’t let me forget the sting rays! How could I?!?!? From the moment we pulled in T was asking when we could “pet” (yes – because they are akin to petting a dog) the sting rays. I am sure the HOA wouldn’t mind those – as long as they are clipped. Hey – maybe we can just hide them in our neighbor’s pool!

So…to sum the day up, the animals are still there – healthy and fun. It is getting more and more crowded – and I know we will be back. By some small miracle we were able to walk out without buying anything – although I am sure we (I) won’t be as lucky the next time we are there.

Annnnnddddd….oh – how could I possibly forget to mention the Yankees Spring Training game against the Braves????? The one where Freddie apparently didn’t like the call on his pitcher – the first pitch in the bottom of the first….where he decided to “chat” with the ump – and then needed a LOOONNNGGGGG timeout in the clubhouse. an eight inning timeout. It was a great game and a great way to see the young kids (ugh) coming up. It was also great to see/hear A-Rod get booed – especially by my own boys. We might be lifelong Yanks fans, but we are not A-Rod fans. Anyway, Yanks won 2-3….only preseason but still nice to have them win with us there!

A fantastic journey here….

Normally we make the trip to FL in a 1.5 days. Hey – you would, too, if you were driving with my boys! This year we decided to stop in NC and visit with one of my close friends and her family. Her son is a couple of years older than Andrew and as he put it, they are brothers from another mother. He really doesn’t know how true that is!

Saturday evening was very relaxing with dinner and hanging out – much needed after spending the day in the car. On Sunday we went to The Lazy 5 Ranch – which I did find somewhat fitting.

It was amazing! We have been to places where you can drive through animal exhibits but they weren’t anything near as cool as this one was. The other great thing was that we decided to take the wagon instead of driving through so we could learn about the animals (and I bought the book so I could remember things!). Let’s just say that I have never been that up close and personal with a water buffalo and its tongue! Can you say slimy????? But it was AWESOME!

Speaking of dinner – I was able to win a battle and treat them to dinner! HA HA HA HA!!!!!! Even better though – taking my boys to watch poor Spencer at Cotillion. Yes, it is a real thing to all Northerners! For the hour before we left, he tried everything possible to get out of going and had two wingmen to help him. He needs to try harder next time.

Dude - that tongue!!!!
Dude – that tongue!!!!

There were a few times that T started begging for new pets…..who is surprised? Nobody?!? Yeah, didn’t think so! I am pretty sure our HOA frowns upon water buffalo, llamas, donkeys, and Scotch Highland Cattle. Meanwhile, Will and Joe were looking at the cattle and planning dinner.

Needless to say, we had a spectacular time. Cassandra, Will, Spencer, and Joe were great hosts and the boys all had a blast together. In fact, the boys are trying to plan the next get together. Not that Cassandra and I aren’t!!!  I am so grateful to have such amazing friends. I felt so comfortable and at home with Cassandra and her family and I know the boys did, too!

Getting ready…….

So….yes I have blogged a tiny bit here and there. Nothing major – my main goal is typically trying to gain pity but usually I end up with people telling me that my kids are hysterical. Yeah, you guys aren’t helping. Some of you lucky people continued to get random Buck boy stories. I call it therapy – you see it as comedy hour. As Andrew says to EVERYTHING….no difference.
Well, in a few short days we are headed south. I am a fairly laid back (lazy?) person but the fact that as of right now all that I have ready are my meds, the pool bag, and the snacks for the car is kind of starting to make me think I should get packing. Ehh, maybe. I also have a couple of small projects that I started when we painted the dinette and kitchen that I want to finish. Oh – and even more important, I HAVE to get my hair cut tomorrow! I also want to blog. The important things!!
The whole reason I decided to blog is because the boys are each going to have a blog for school while we are gone. I know – it could get interesting. T is super excited and A….well, he is an 11 yr old boy. The poor thing is missing three weeks of school and I am having him blog. I can hear the violins as I type. I am pretty sure it is worthy of a call to cps.
On the way to Florida we are spending a couple of days with one of my favorite people. My vacation before my vacation! Then on the way home, we spend time with another of my favorite people!! My bookends (yeah, I am sure they are thrilled with that comparison).
So, on all of those completely random notes, I am going to pretend to do something useful. Maybe. Probably not. I am sure there is a Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis Murder, or Hart to Hart marathon somewhere to distract me!
